A rare sequel that can stand alone, 1983's The Black Stallion Returns is both a fun follow-up to the 1979 Carroll Ballard/Francis Ford Coppola film and a fine adventure in its own right. Kelly Reno returns as the now adolescent, deceptively ordinary Alec Ramsay, who stows away on a plane for Casablanca after the titular horse is kidnapped by Arabs. Getting him back pitches Alec into the middle of tribal rivalries and all sorts of complicated, dangerous intrigue. The cast includes Teri Garr, Vincent Spano, and Woody Strode, but the real star here may be cinematographer Carlo Di Palma, a veteran of several Woody Allen films and a master of color, light, and framing. Director Robert Dalva edited the previous film and happily executes countless ideas he appears to have stored up from his first stallion outing. But it's Reno's resourceful hero--his anti-Harry Potter normalcy--that finally takes hold of viewers. --Tom Keogh

Two original soundtrack recordings on a single CD. The first is the original film score for the 1979 film THE BLACK STALLION directed by Carroll Ballard (FLY AWAY HOME) and starring Mickey Rooney (It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World), Teri Garr (Classic Star Trek) and Hoyt Axton (Gremlins) featuring music by is the Carmine Coppola (The Godfather Trilogy) and additional music by Shirley Walker (Batman-The Animated Series, The Flash and Space: Above and Beyond). The second film score is for the 1983 sequel THE BLACK STALLION RETURNS directed by Robert Dalva (Jurassic Park III) and starring Kelly Reno (Amazing Stories) and scored by the late Georges Delerue (Joe vs. The Volcano). Both scores sweeping orchestral efforts that are reminiscent of the works of John Barry, Ennio Morricone and Rachel Portman.

In 1979, shortly after Francis Ford Coppola completed ‘Apocalypse Now’, he started work on Walter Farley’s masterpiece about a beautiful horse that escapes a shipwreck with a young boy, and the two return to the United States and become a competitive horse-racing team. That story, of course, was ‘The Black Stallion’.
As with ‘Apocalypse Now’, Francis Ford Coppola’s father, Carmine, composed the score for ‘The Black Stallion’. A better score could not have been created for this wonderful movie. For the record, this is the complete soundtrack – all the original score (and some unused cues, such as ‘Fire on Board’), are included here. The best musical tracks seem to come after Alec & ‘The Black’ as he becomes known, reach the remote island after the shipwreck. Piano cues depict the horse as he appears on the beach, racing across the sand in front of Alec’s cave that he uses as a shelter. In the sequence where Alec rides the stallion across the sand & through the surf, the orchestra gives a triumphant melody of brass & percussion cues as the two race through the surf. The score, one of Coppola’s last, was a triumphant work that deserved an Academy Award.
A marvelous soundtrack, which any movie/soundtrack collector would be happy to have!
